THE importance of roads in the development of communications in general was emphasised by Road Haulage Association vice-chairman Albert Neely at the Annual Dinner of the RHA Devon and Cornwall Area.

He said that improved roads were among the factors which had made possible the reorganisation of the BHA into eight administrative districts. "We must accept that, while far from perfect, the road network is infinitely better than it was 20 years ago", he said.

*Now, with the existence of the M5, I can still do a morning's work in my office in Birmingham and have the time to drive down to Torquay this afternoon without suffering the frustration of the lane which was known as the A38."

Mr Neely referred to the forthcoming public inquiry into the proposed North Devon link road, at which the Association would be represented by local personnel.

He referred to the efforts which had been made by an vironmental group to de progress on the M40 extens by buying a large field on line of the proposed new n and selling it in square foot I to as many different people ir many different countries as sible.

He warned the local repres tatives in Devon and Cornwal make sure a similar obstrucl did not occur over the North von link.
