HE GREATER Manchester ouncil has issued lorry parking ,oposals to control the envi)nm enta I impact of lorries ithin urban areas.

The Northern Region of the :eight Transport Association is welcomed the proposals, it is worried about the lack of :ovision for overnight parking, hile Labour leaders within the anchester City Council have died for a re-think.

The proposals come about ter a successful pilot scheme lrried out in Haywood, Man!ester.

The FTA said that the GMC has ainly chosen the most suitable irking locations, but warned at many street parking places ay alter as areas of derelict id are developed.

One aspect that the FTA was )t too happy about was the lack provision for secure overnight rrking. It has suggested that )mmuter car parks and opping car parks that become ipty by about 6pm each even would be ideal for use as ernight lorry parks.

They would provide adequate curity, the FTA said, and ould be employed on an expenental basis.

Labour leaders of Manchester :y Council are calling for a renk of GMC's plans.

ouncillor Bill Egerton, leader the Manchester City Council, id: "The County Council ould provide proper lorry rks. Under the present plan 3re will still be parking near to iools, parks and other recreanal facilities."
