In commending the proposal to control entry to membership of the overseas group of BAR "The Hawk" suggests (CM November 26) that other trade associations should follow the example.
In fact the International Group of the RHA has for several years imposed strict qualification on members, including observance of a code of conduct.
The applicant has to be proposed and seconded in writing by members of the group and may be required to produce documentary evidence of the work he has been doing and even of his financial stability.
On acceptance he has to serve a probationary period of 12 months before full membership is granted.
There is, of course, procedure for enforcement of the code of conduct and in the last resort to expel a member from the group, remove his name from the Directory of International Hauliers and issue a press notice.
