THE Transport Department is looking into the possibilities for more effective fittings for heavy vehicles to catch mud or water thrown up by the wheels.

• Section opens

THE THIRD section of the new A9 trunk road between Perth and Inverness was opened to traffic last week. It was the 51/2-mile stretch between Slochd Summit and Dalmagarry, about 12 miles north of Inverness.

The overall scheme provides a new road on a much-improved alignment, running to the east of the existing A9 and forming a by-pass for Tomatin. It includes a new 850ft fivespan bridge crossing about 120ft above the River Findhorn.

Constructed with a composite steel beam and reinforced concrete deck, the bridge is supported on reinforced concrete piers.
