SOME OF THE UK'S largest pallet networks have experienced upheaval among their members this week, with some hauliers swapping networks for rival operations.

Oldham-based Safe Logistics Group (SLG), a founder member of Palletways, has jumped ship to join Palletline. SLG acquired Palletline member Geoffrey Reyner last year and now handles 3,000 pallets every week for Palletline, covering much of the Manchester and Oldham areas. According to SLG MD Gordon Haynes, the move is designed to improve quality and service levels.

In the same week Transland Group has made a "strategic move" from Pall-Ex to UK Pallets, citing the network's "vast network and strong centralised control policy".

Palletways Manchester, a division of Leeds-based Walkers Transport, is now covering SLG's area.

Finally, Bangor-based Baynes and Son has switched to Pallet force from United Pallet Network (UPN). MD Mike Baynes explains: "We had a good relationship with UPN but felt that Palletforce offered bigger and better opportunities for the future.

"Palletforces unique shareholder ownership structure particularly impressed us," he adds.

Baynes and Son will cover parts of the LL postcode; it will be sharing the work with Edwin C Farall (Transport).
