Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Why do you need to attend CM'S conference on the EU Compulsory Training Directive?

Because it will affect every operator and driver in the UK Brian Weatherley reports.

When the Compulsory Training Directive (CTD) comes into force in 2009, every truck driver in the UK — and throughout the EU — will be required to take extensive training to obtain and retain a Driver's Certificate of Professional Competence, or CPC. This requirement is broken down into two elements: initial training and periodic training.

The initial training will cover all new LGV drivers. Would-he truck drivers will have to take an exam based on various training modules as well as the existing written and practical LGV driving tests.

Existing drivers have acquired rights and will automatically be awarded their CPCs. However, both existing and new drivers will be required to complete periodic training — at least 35 hours of professional training every five years. This could include refreshers on drivers' hours, economy driving and load security as well as more peripheral factors such as driver fatigue and health.

Forward thinking But why worry about a law that is still over two years away? Because careful planning will minimise the impact of the CTD on your operation.

And that's where Commercial Motor's second annual Compulsory Training Directive conference comes in.

The conference, to be held at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham on Thursday 28 September, will feature expert speakers who will spell out what the law is, how you'll be expected to apply it, what the trainers will provide and how you'll be expected to prove you're complying.

And that's just for starters. You'll also get a view from our corn petitors over the water, with guest speakers from the Dutch haulage trade association VTL who'll explain how hauliers in the Netherlands (one of Europe's most successful and professional road transport nations) are preparing for the new law through proactive traininv, programmes.

Union view

And we'll be wrapping up with a no-nonsense presentation from the sharp end courtesy of a leading official from theTransport and General Workers Union who will tell delegates what the UK's largest drivers' union expects from the law and from employers.

The list of speakers will also include one of the UK's leading transport lawyers as well as a senior executive from the Driving Standards Agency (the government body most closely involved with the CTD).
