• The former director of disgraced haulier Taphaul has now been sacked from his position at Curries of Dumfries.
Thomas Malcolm, who was the director of Cowdenbeathbased Taphaul. until it went bust in February, was banned from holding an Operator's Licence after his drivers gave evidence that he had forced them to break the drivers hours regulations.
Soon after this he secured a job with Curries working in their transport office on the Tosco contract that Taphaul had previously been running. David Ross, group development director for Curries, says the company, which is running the Tosco contract 100% legally, did not know the full facts of the Taphaul case. "Now that we know the full facts Thomas Malcolm is no longer in our employment."
Ten former drivers for Taphaul have also been laid off but this is down to the closure of the Cowdenbeath depot which Curries also took oven according to Ross.
The drivers appeared before the Scottish Traffic Commissioner Michael Betts two weeks ago. Facing a suspension or revocation of their HGV licences most said they were forced to drive over their hours or lose their jobs.
Betts has given his decision on the licences in writing. As CM went to press at least one driver had received a week's suspension.
