• A council road worker was killed when a wheel came off a truck in Dublin last week.

The wheel detached from the near side rear axle of a rigid travelling south on the main Beast to Dublin Road.

The imported truck was being used by a local operator and was half-laden when the accident occurred. according to local police.

Four council workers had alighted from their own truck to erect warning signs of future road work disruptions, when the loose wheel separated as the truck passed them by.

Paddy Donnelly, 26, died when he was struck by the wheel as he stood on the side of the road. Another worker sustained a broken leg, and the other two were treated for shock. The driver was unhurt, but was also treated for shock.

Irish police have appealed for witnesses to the 31 July accident which happened at 14.30.
