cleared by PCA • The policeman who headed the investigation into the Sowerby Bridge disaster has been cleared by the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) following a series of allegations against him.

Last September Inspector Gary Walsh was accused of acting in a vindictive way towards Fewston Transport, disclosing information to the press and not disclosing information at the inquest.

But the PCA has now decided there are no grounds for disciplinary charges against him.

"He's been completely cleared," says a spokesman. "The inquiry found the officer did not have the authority to disclose the relevant statements even if he had wished to. There is nothing to indicate the officer suppressed details of the lorry driver's standard of driving. There is also no evidence that he acted in a vindictive manner."
