Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I NOTED with interest in your issue of July 20 that the British Standards Institution is to consider production of a standard for brake fluids.

The Society, through the efforts of the Brakes Committee, produced in 1958 an S.M.M.T. Standard for brake fluid heavy duty type No. 200/1 and have practically completed 200/2 in respect of a fluid for severe duty braking. Both these S.M.M.T. documents are in possession of the British Standards Institution and the former is being studied for acceptance as an automobile standard and subsequently as a British standard.

S.M.M.T. data sheet No. 200/2 is in draft form and is also in possession of the B.S.I. for study.

The Society have an agreement that in future the S.M.M.T. will continue to .prepare data sheets, and copies will be lodged with the B.S.I. for acceptance as automobile standards and/or British standards.

London, •S.W.1. A. G. BATEMAN, Technical Officer, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Ltd.
