IN 10 years the staff at the Ministry of I Transport has risen by just over a thousand to 7,256—and the bill for salaries and wages has more than doubled, to over Om.
Answering a Commons question, Mr. Marples said that on April 1, 1951, there were 4,845 permanent and 1,401 temporary non-industrial staff in the Ministry. The corresponding figures last April were 6,192 and 1,064. The greater part of this increase was accounted for by the recruitment of additional driving examiners.
