Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

lUTANAGERS in charge of the YI operation and maintenance of a company's goods vehicles are often entrusted also with the responsibility of a private-car fleet, which may exceed in number the total of lorries and vans. Although the basic principles of a vehicle-control system may be the same for both classes of vehicle, it is usually the case that entirely different problems arise because of the varying ways in which cars, as distinct from goods vehicles, are used.

A new and well-prepared publication of the Nuffield Organization, Central Publicity Department, Cowley, Oxford, will as.sist those executives, perhaps better versed in goods-vehicle control, to evolve a satisfactory plan for private cars to meet the specific conditions that they present. Entitled "Fleet Logic," the text of the booklet is divided into 17 sections, specimen headings of which are "Quantity Users' Agreement," "Contract, Individual and Hirepurchase Buying," "Use of Cars for Private Running and "Running Costs Percentage Analysis."

Breakdown of costs for good cars subject to proper organization is given as follows: fuel, 33 per cent.; lubricants, 2 per cent.; repairs, 5 per cent.; garaging, 5 per cent.; cleaning, 31 per cent; tyres, sundries and delivery charges, 7 per cent.; tax, insurance and depreciation, 40 per cent.; management, 4f per cent.

A valuable supplement to the publication is a compendium of forms designed to represent a sufficient documentation system. There is a suggested form for a weekly report on costs and quantities of materials used, a monthly summary, and a six-monthly check on vehicle condition. Two large sheets are for the quarterly recording of the operating costs of individual cars, and for the collation of these figures_
