A RESEARCH ON FARM-TRACTOR PNEUMATICS

AN interesting booklet, entitled " Research on Pneumatic Tyres for Farm Tractors," has been issued at 2s. net, by the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Askham Bryan, York. It is a report of work carried out in 1939-40 by the Institute for Research in Agricultural Engineering, University of Oxford, for the British Rubber Producers' Research Association.

The results are given in the form of overall-efficiency . and slip-efficiency curves plotted on a basis of drawbar pull. From the former curves the

results of the tests carried out with the largest and smallest tyres are presented as overall-efficiency curves plotted on a basis of drawbar pull+estimated live back 'axle weight. This gives a good picture of the results over a wide range of conditions and enables an estimate to be formed' of what may be considered to be a reasonable maximum working drawbar pull for all sizes of tyre over, a range of back-axle weights.

The folloWing general conclusions are drawn from the results:—A large diameter tyre is less affected by ground conditions than is a small one. As regards back-axle weight, increasing this on a tyre makes its performance less dependent on ground conditions and increases the drawbar pull. Tyre section does not appear to be important,. but no tests were carried out on very light land where a large section may show to advantage.. Increasing inflation pressure, above the minimum permissible reduces efficiency. Tyres should be run with the lowest pressure which will not cause damage through excessive deflation. EXPORTS TO BELGIUM AND LUXEMBURG

THEBoard of Trade Journal " dated June 16 contains a list of goods which can be exported to Belgium and Luxemburg through • only Government channels. This list has been modified and comprises the following in our sphere:—Trucks, tractors (other than garden type), petroleum products and hand tools.

CHOOSING TYNEMOUTH'S . BUS-STATION SITE COLLOWING an interview with the

local Chamber of Commerce, Tyne.. mouth Corporation has asked the borough engineer to report on alternative sites for a bus station. The corporation proposed establishing the station in the Northumberland Square area, • but it was contended that this was too far from the centre of the town. The Chamber of Commerce representatives suggested that if a site nearer the shopping centre be adopted, more people would come to Tynemouth for shopping purposes.
