Congestion: Central Cardiff suffers a lot of congestion at peak times, and the City Council is looking at introducing timed congestion charging to limit this. The A40, M4, particularly around Port Talbot, and the A470, all suffer peak-time congestion, as does the A4032 from Newport northwards to Abergavenny. The BrynglasTunnel on the M4 is always congested. The minister is still looking at the case for a relief road but, even if approved, building is unlikely to start before 2013.
North-south links: Cross-Wales deliveries tend to come out of Wales on to English motorways and back in because of a lack of useful
trunk roads through the rural centre. The Welsh Assembly's leuan Wyn Jones is keen to improve north-south links, and is looking at possible solutions for the A470 and the A483, such as bypasses around villages, road straightening and HGV lanes. Duelling is unlikely since there is insufficient traffic to justify the capital outlay
Truck parka: "There aren't any," says Gallagher. "There is an urgent need for driver facilities in Wales. It is a major concern, and this is now being recognised." The lack of truck parks makes the stream of foreign drivers coming into Holyhead and Fishguard, as well as the South Wales ports, problematic.
