Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

be demonstrating their green credentials and vying for environmental kudos. We review what's on offer.

Words: Louise Cole

1. The New Kangoo Van wilibe

gracing the Renault Vans stand (hall 11 stand 310) as an integral part of Renault's eco2 environmental initiative. To be eligible for this programme, vehicles must meet three strict criteria, including being manufactured in a plant that has secured ISO 14001 certification, which means it achieves continual improvement in reducing the impact of its activities on the environment. Additionally, its CO2 emissions must not exceed 140g/km or it must be able to run on E85 bioethanol or B30 biodiesel. The new Kangoo Van will offer two diesel engines with emissions of 140g/km or less. Finally, at least 5% of the plastics used in their production must be made from recycled materials. Renault eco2 end-of-life vehicles are designed to be 95% reusable by weight. The new Karwoo Van contains 6% recycled plas!ic it. Renault Trucks UK (hall 20 stand ) will also be vying for environmental kudos with new Optifttel Solutions programme. Optifuel pulls ' ogether Renault's fuel-efficient engines, integrated drivelines and a support package to help operators minimise fuel consumption. Although the marketing is aimed equally at road transport operators' wallets, it must be accepted that every litre in diesel saved is 2.63kg of carbon emission saved, so fuel economy is probably Mir of green initiiiiiik 62 COMMERCIAL MOTOR 10/04/08 3. Gray & Adams (hall 6 stand 220) will be featuring aerodynamics and noise reduction. Its tie trailer design adheres to Dutch PIEK standards which approve vehicles emitting less than 60 decibels. Gray & Adams will also have short urban delivery trailers for Tesco and Sainsbury's at the show, as well as an 18-tonne Marks & Spencer rigid vehicle mounted on a Daf chassis. The rigid's low-noise features include a retractable Dhollandia ultra-low-noise tail-lift and a Gray & Adams low-noise floor surface. A fuel-efficient 13.6m GIST trailer, with an aerodynamically shaped roof and full aerodynamic sideskirts, promises significant fuel savings.

4. Connaught (hall 12 stand 458) will be showing off its Hybrid+ retrofit system, which will initially grace seven Tesco Ford Transits. Instead of the high-voltage battery packs normally seen in hybrids — which Connaught says are expensive and ultimately lead to disposal problems — the Hybrid+ features super capacitors which recharge through braking. The company says this system is the only retrofit hybrid available and is equally suited to petrol or diesel engines. Tesco is expected to use the technology throughout its light CV fleet if the six-month trial is successful. 5. Also making waves with new hybrid technology is Frigoblock (hall 20 stand 028). It will display what it claims is the first hybrid-drive refrigerated trailer, powered from the alternator drive in the truck engine. Frigoblock says the system is already 90% cleaner than standard fridges, which only reach Euro-3 emission levels; once its closed carbon particulate filter system is in place in the autumn, the engine (a DC Smart diesel) will reach Euro-5 levels. Frigoblock says the system achieves a 30% fuel saving in diesel mode and 50% in alternator mode, has 40% less weight and offers 50% higher refrigeration and heating capacity.

6. An all-electric fridge range is also on display at the Frigoblock stand, which it says achieves better payload, halves maintenance costs, halves CO2 emissions and cuts exhaust mid noise emissions by 90% (emissions presumably measured against a Euro-3 trailer). The RE evaporators used are also an important feature, according to the company, since they ensure the maximum stability of temperature even when multi-drop requires the repeated opening and closing of doors. 7. Truckprotect (TP) (hall 19 stand 011) will be talking about its diesel and biodiesel cleanser which counteracts the microbial invasion that can cause problems for engines. TP says the device — which is small, easy to fit and requires no power source or maintenance comes with a 10-year guarantee. It cleans the fuel instantly as the engine starts and increases the filter and injector lifespans. Bin-contamination is particularly a problem with biofuels due to their organic base; TP further points out that the biocides which have reduced this problem are soon to he banned. The company will also be showing its wheel nuts and anti-siphoning devices which protect against theft.

8. Schmitz Cargobull's environmental message is the recyclability of its trailers (hall 20 stand 540). Its curtainsider and SIC° reefer chassis are almost entirely recyclable as the floors are constructed of wood from sustainable sources, while the refrigerated units are constructed using Ferroplast. These panels do not absorb water, even if the steel skin gets pierced, unlike Styrofoam, avoiding accumulation of unwanted payload over time.

9. Check out the Freight Transport Association stand (hall 8 stand 240) for CarbonFTA, a service which helps operators measure and monitor their carbon footprint. This service is being run in conjunction with www.sustainable distribution.com, a website dedicated to green running.

10. On the Michelin stand (hall 8 stand 340), the company's philosophy for reducing both its own and operators' carbon footprints will be on show, with the new four-life tyre policy. Michelin believes that choosing the most appropriate tyre, with an optimal balance between rolling resistance and durability, aids fuel economy and extends tyre life. The first-life tyre is retreaded when it is worn, giving a second life — considerably cheaper to the operator than the first — and when it is worn beyond use. the casing returns to Michelin to be remixed. When the tread is worn, the remixed tyre can be retreaded again. Only when the Lyre reache,, the end of this life is it finally recycled for other industrial use.

1 1 . Shell Rimula R6 LME 5W-30 will be on the Shell stand (hall 8 stand 050) as part of a revamped lubricant range. Claims include helping improve the bottom line while reducing businesses' carbon footprints. Rimula R6 LME helps to achieve low emissions through "independently validated energy saving and fuel economy". In case you were wondering, the L stands for low SAPS, the M for extended maintenance intervals and the E for economy.
