Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Roanna Avison OPERATORS IN Inverness have complained to Vosa because the local test station has stopped offering pre-test checks.

Vosa test stations carry out smoke and brake checks for hauliers, so they can make sure their vehicles are fit for test. One haulier contacted CM to say he was very disappointed he was no longer able to do these voluntary tests at the Inverness Vosa station.

" [ScottishTraffic Commissioner] Joan Aitken says every vehicle should pass its MoT first time — but if you're not able to get a voluntary smoke test and brake test beforehand, how are you supposed to know if there are going to be any problems?" he asks.

-We cannot check the vehicle until it gets into the real test, and this means our first-time failure rates could go up."

The driver says he spoke to the station manager, who said the facility was so busy with tests that it did not have time to provide the voluntary checks.

"I don't think this is good enough because it could affect my 0-licence," he adds.

While unable to talk specifically about the issues at Inverness, a Vosa spokeswoman says: -Vosa carries out both statutory and voluntary testing initiatives. Vosa's core activity is based on annual lorry and bus testing, and the level of service must not be prejudiced by voluntary schemes.

"When statutory testing demand is high, station managers are responsible for controlling the scheme at their own location by taking into consideration forward booking times, station capacity and staff availability." she adds.

"Customers who cannot get an appointment for their test at the required time are advised to check availability on alternative days, or contact other test stations."
