NINE vehicles have been removed from the psv operator's licence held by Henry Hulley and Sons Ltd, of Baslow, by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners after evidence was found that the company had grossly neglected its vehicles.
Vehicle examiner Roy Manning said that during a spot check in February he examined two vehicles. Both were badly neglected and he issued two immediate prohibitions. Nine vehicles were subsequently inspected, with seven immediate, and one delayed prohibition being imposed.
Senior vehicle examiner Brian Andrew said the yard had been deep in mud, and the inspection pit flooded with water to within two feet of its brim.
Hulley transport manager John Cash said he had been appointed in February to replace the previous transport manager, following the vehicle examiner's visit. Hulley's managing director, John Woolliscroft, had also been replaced.
Reducing the licence from 17 vehicles to eight, Commissioners' chairman Maj Gen John Carpenter said they did not feel that it would be in the public interest to put the company out of business. With a reduced fleet, there was no reason why Hulleys should not reach the required standard of maintenance. If the situation had not been discovered, it was highly likely there would have been a serious accident, but it had been caught in time, which was a good reflection on the licensing system.
He directed that a further fleet check be carried out in six months.
