• A consortium of 30 North East local authorities appealed recently at Newcastle to the Minister's Inspector against fare increases granted last _autumn to the Darlington, Co. Durham, based United Automobile Services.
Mr Wilf Steer, for the authorities, said the company had not only applied for the increases to meet rising costs, but also to bring in enhanced profits. They believed that in the present financial climate the margin of profit required by the company was disproportionately great. While accepting some increases were necessary, they had suggested an alternative proposal which would cut the increase in profit by £61,000 to £90,000 a figure which they thought adequate.
For the company, Mr J. L. R. Croft said he could not accept Mr Steer's statement that the increases were unreasonable.
