Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The articles by Mr R. P. C. Block under the title Costing for Maximum Profit which attracted so much attention when they were published in CM during the latter part of 1969 have now been published in book form, with the addition of an index and full-size examples of the forms used in his costing system. Supplies of the forms will also be made available separately now that the book is published: details of price and availability are given in the book itself.

The book provides a uniquely detailed stepby-step guide. in plain language. to the establishment of a costing and cost accounting system applicable to any size of road transport operation, whether own-account of hire-andreward. Examples given in the book, including some in tabular form, show how the system can be varied to suit either type of operation.

Beginning with a simple method of obtaining basic operating information from drivers' special record forms, the book takes the reader through the whole routine required to calculate costs and earnings for each vehicle, the fleet costs and earnings, and the trading results of the business. It then suggests how this information should be applied in management

action—notably in stopping profit leaks.

The book has some very valuable comments to make on depreciation and management accounting, and suggests a very practical approach to depreciation which may be new to some people. It also explains very clearly how to allocate and interpret the cost and revenue figures which the system produces, and this is one of its most valuable aspects. The explanations are made all the clearer by the inclusion of examples of the results obtained by a fictitious, but nevertheless realistic, fleet, around which much of the book is written.

From "first steps in budgetary control" up to detailed budgeting and monitoring methods, Mr Block then shows how modern business techniques can be used by even the smallest operator to keep his operations on the right side of the profit/loss line. And he has some useful advice on business practices—backed by his many years as a large contract hire operator.

Costing for Maximum Profit costs 16s including post and packing: orders for 12 copies or more will be charged at 14s a copy, while orders for 50 copies or more will cost 12s a copy, including all post and packing.

The publication is obtainable only from Sales Dept, IPC Business Press Ltd, 161 Fleet Street, London EC4.
