DOPER scales of rates were 'essential 1if hauliers were to continue to fulfil their main function, said the Road Haulage Association Chairman, Mr. D. 0. Good, speakingat the annual dinner of the Northern area at Newcastle upon Tyne on Wednesday. A short time ago the R.H.A. decided not to make a general recommendation for 'a rise in rates, continued Mr. Good, and it was felt that this gesture might be helpful to the country% economy at the present time when there 'via& a tendency towards inflation. But it was not the intention that members who were not receiving an adequate return for their services should refrain from asking their customers for an increase in rates.

While the industry remained free of political interference there wes no danger that hauliers would charge rates that were too high, said Mr. Good. " Perhaps the greatest danger threatening road haulage is the danger of too intensive competition leading to wholesale rate cutting. I would, therefore, urge hauliers to show 4 greater spirit of co-operation on th:s vital question."
