Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ENERAL reaction of the commercialvehicle industry to the _Budget was favourable concerning the reliefs, but of disappointment in respect of the maintenance of the fuel duty. These were the coma-tents made by various organizations on Tuesday night:—

Society of Motor Manufacturers and .1:faders : " The motor industry gratefully welcomes the fact that purchase tax on goods-vehicle "chassis is 'abolished. By • encouraging home sales and promoting

• higher levels of employment, and more economic levels of production, these. changes Will assist oue manufacuarers in maintaining competitive prices in the sales drivetabroad.'

. The Society regret 'that, with certain minor exceptions, the duty on. fuel is to remain at its present exorbitant level."

British Road Federation : "In the widest s'ense;the commercial road User would seem

• to have a fair share of the Budget, but the

• 11.R.F. are disappointed that the fuel tax is 'unchanged. The purchase-tax abolition is particularly welcome."

British Electric Traction : " We are greatly disappointetfthat fuel tax has not been taken Off. 'Money saved as a result of the cut in Excise licences will be devoted to the maintenance of services, especially in rural areas. • TJiis reduction is equivalent,. in effect, to a cut of 4d, is gallon in fuel tax."

Traders' Road' Transport Association : `-` The .decision to abolishthe purchase tax on goods-vehicle chassis. is weleome news.

The tax was initially imposed with the object Of limiting home-market sales to stimulate exports, and this need has disappeared. We have been-urging for some time that the tax should be ended."

Lord Rootes : "This is a Budget which should help the country's export trade. The abolition of the tax on commercial-vehicle chassis is ail indication that the Government have recognized that .transport is a great factor in production costs. Industry at large will. I am sure, be grateful."

• Road Haulage Association : Welcoming the abolition of purchase Fax on goods-vehicle chassis. Mr_ R. Morton Mitchell, chief executive officer, added that the reference to ditty on heavy oils for subsidiary engines Was a little obscure and required more study,

• but it was obvious that the Chancellor did %not -intend to end the situation under which the railways enjoyed tax-free fuel for diesel trains with which they competed with road Muliers.

Simms Motor Units, Ltd.: Mr. G. E Liardet, chairman' .stated that the elimination of the purchase 'tax on goods-vehicle chassis must tend towards an overall reduction in costs and prices of goods in shot.
