Mn. C. H. SWANZY, traffiL. manager of Meade-King Robinson and Co., Ltd., Liverpool, was elected, on Monday, chairman of the Liverpool branch of the Industrial Transport Association, of which he was a founder member and the first branch secretary.

He commenced his transport. career with the Midland Railway Co., at Liverpool, in 1909, and joined MeadeKing Robinson and Co. in 1911, being promoted to the position of traffic manager in 1920. In 1925-26 he was a member of the Traders Traffic Conference, Birmingham.

Mr. Swanzy recently put' forward a scheme for the construction of a series of tubes radiating from the centre of the city as a means for relieving traffic congestion. MR. C. H. LEONARD, the senior partner of Messrs. Carless, Capel and Leonard, has just retired from business after 54 years in the service of the firm. He and his brother, the late Mr. W. J. Leonard, were the first 'producers of motor spirit in this country, to which they gave the distinctive name of " petrol." The firm is also well known as the pioneers of " Coalene," the new motor spirit largely comprised of liquid fuel produced from coal. The business of the firm will be carried on in the same manner as before by the remaining partners, Messrs. H. R. Leonard, J. G. Leonard, and J. M. Leonard.

At a general meeting of the Institution of Automobile Engineers, held on Tuesday, the Institution medal was awarded to MR. W. A. Tommy "for his influence on the advancement of 'automobile engineering by the application of his abilities to the work of the research and standardization committee of the Institution." The medal was established in 1922, and has been awarded on 10 occasions.
