Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE MAUDSLAY MOTOR 00., LTD., of Coventry, are producing three distinct types of their commercial vehicles; these follow very closely on the lines of their pre-war programme, but a number of detailed alterations have 'been adopted with a view to the general stiffening-up of the various chassis. The 3-ton model is fitted with a four-cylinder engine of 4i ins. by 5 ins. bore and stroke respectively, giving an R.A.C. rating of 32.4 h.p.' as in pre-war models the drive is taken through a cone clutch an6 four-speed gearbox to a worm-driven back axle. The wheelbase is 13 ft. 6 ins., and the overall length 21 ft. 3 ins.; 900 mm. by 120 min. tyres are used on the front wheels, and 1,050' nun. by 120 mm. twin tyres on the driving wheels.

The 4-ton model is now a subsidy vehicle, and a number of alterations have been made in order to meet the W.D. requirements. The frame is 5 ins, by 21 ins., and of very heavy channel section. Both engine and gearbox are carried on a substantial sub-frame, which is suspended at the front and the rear fromthe tubular crass members. The engine, which has a 5 ins, bore and 5 ins.

stroke, develops 40 h.p. R.A.C. sating and follows the usual. Maudslay lines with overhead valves and camshaft, the latter being driven by skew gear from a vertical shaft; the casing, which includes the whole valve mechanism, is, as previously, hinged on the offside so that by merely undoing four nuts from the holding-down stays on the inner side the whole of this part of the engine can be turned over, and any necessary attention given to the valve-operating gear.

'A water pump is located on the nearside of the substantial radiator, which is of the gilled tube type; the pump is driven by means of Whittle belting. The magneto is on the offside of the engine and is driven by a silent chain.

The four-speed-gearbox has been redesigned on more substantial lines, and better provision has been made for taking the thrust ; the gearbox itself has been set further back ha the frame and the striking gear and selector mechanism are now separate from the gearbox itself. The cone clutch is fitted with a atop, which is located on a bracket across the frame. The back axle is of the banjo type with double reduction, and is exceedingly substantial. Very still torque

rods are provided on either side. The • hand brake actuates large expanding shoes in drums on the back axle and compensation is provided. The foot brake takes effect on a drum behind the gearbox, and means of adiusting the brake from outside the frame is provided.

All the wheels are mounted an bearings of the plain variety. The petrol tank is of 30-gallon capacity fitted with the large filler, filter, and a gauge. The petrol feed is by the Autovac system. The wheelbase is 13 ft. 6 ins.

The 5-ton vehicle follows -the usual Mandalay specification with the double reduction type of back axle. The wheel base is 14 ft. 6 ins., giving an overall length of 25 It, and the tyres are 900 mm. by 140 sum. on the front and twin 1,060 mm. by 140 mm. on the rear. The prices of the 3, 4 and 5-ton vehicle4.are quoted as £895, £975 and £1,060 respectively, but these prices are subject to alteration without notice.

Chars-k-banes with a carrying capacity of 28 passengers are also made in the 32 h.p. and 40 h.p. models, with chassis specifications similar to the 3 and 4-ton vehicles. The prices are £895 and £925 respectively.
