Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANOTHER tram service in Newcastle-on-Tyne will be replaced by buses on September 11, and afterwards the only trams operating will be those

running between Newcastle and Gateshead.

Owing to the heavy peak loads on the tram route, it will not be possible to complete the changeover to buses at once, and trams will augment the buses at peak hours until the end of September. It is expected that there will then be sufficient buses to abolish the trams altogether.

The gradual changeover from trams to motorbuses and trolleybuses started at Newcastle-on-Tyne about 15 years ago. •
