A Paragon of design? How Safeway's new software system makes its logcs flow...

The new software, which is designed by Paragon, uses information from Safeway's central system which takes store orders. then creatE pallet loads and assigns them to vehicles, taking into account what supplier pickups and deliveries are scheduled for that day.

It is also connected to global positioning satellite technology, which guides delivery drivers to depots and stores and automahcal, gives store staff a warning when the load is 20 minutes away.

Safeway and VVincanton have taken well tried technology but have brought various systems together to allow much greater efficiency than running them separately.

This software allows routes to be more efficiently planned, with trucks travelling between RDCs in their region, as well as between stores, consolidation centres and suppliers. This will cut empty running, and Safeway will also be using more subcontractors if it's more efficient, as well as hauling loads for other retailers.

Other benefits include reducing overall fleet size, improving vehicle use by eliminating missed collections from suppliers and cutting empty running. Safeway also believes it will result in more kilometres per driver hour and per litre of fuel. Staff productivity, from the warehouse to drivers, is expected to increase "significantly".
