ANEW heavy-duty tender, the Unimog-S, was demonstrated by John Kerr and Co. (Manchester), Ltd., Kirkby, Liverpool, Mercedes-Benz distributors, at the annual joint conference of the Chief Fire Officers' Association and the Institution of Fire Engineers at Brighton last week.

This vehicle, intended for use as a rescue or fire tender in rough country, is said to be able to negotiate 1-in-I.4 gradients, climb vertical steps 1 ft. 3+ in. high, take narrow ditches and fords up to 2 ft. 7+ in, deep, and traverse sand and marshland. It has a maximum side tilting angle of 42°.

The Unimog-S, which is capable of 60 m.p.h. on the open road, has a front cable winch which attains a tractive power of 3 tons. It can supply Com

pressed air and can be fitted with an electricity generator. It is also suitable for snow clearing. Models available range from 1-8 tons capacity, the heaviest being fitted with a multi-fuel engine.

The 11-ton model has a six-cylindered four-stroke engine with an output of 85 gross b.h.p. The fully synchronized transmission has six forward gears, and after the separate reverse control has been engaged they all serve in reverse. Twospeed auxiliary creeping gear and front and. rear power take-off shafts can be

fitted. The front-wheel drive can he disconnected, and there is a differential lock on front and rear axles. This model has a compression ratio of 6.8 : 1 and was chosen to facilitate the use of reasonably price.d fuel.
