Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Trucks are to be banned from travelling through the Lower Town area of Fishguard forcing drivers using the coastal road to the port make a 60-mile detour.

Commercial vehicles over 13m are to be banned from a two-mile stretch of the A487 through the town, except for access, following a long campaign by residents.

This follows a number of cases of trucks becoming stuck trying to negotiate tricky bends through Lower Town, and the rejection of plans for a bypass.

The suggested alternative route for hauliers going to and from the port from north or south is via Haverfordwest and Cardigan—a detour of 60 miles.

Martin Hall of local haulier W F Hall says the ban will add an hour to journeys to the Midlands and even more to trips to North Wales. "The only vehicles that have difficulty on the sharp bend are car transporters," he says. "Other artics have been using the road for years."

The Welsh Office says the ban will start "shortly".

7 Trucks also look set to be banned from the Essex village of Little Bentley, near Manning-tree when the County Council's traffic and road safety committee meets today (9 May). The movefollows complaints from residents about trucks visiting a local aggregates quarry.
