Although The Hawk is a Londoner. he has never been that keen on seeing the sights. All that traipsing around does his bunions no favours whatsoever! However, this novel form of transport might change his mind. From 1 April tourists will be able to hop aboard a London Frog Tours amphibious vehicle and explore the capital by land and water without ever having to leave their seats.
The operators are running six vehicles, which depart from their "lily pad" at County Hall. The frogs will take in Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus before "splashdown" into the Thames at Vauxhall. The 30-seater vehicles have been converted from WWII amphibious landing craft known as DUKWs.
The DUKWs were built in the US in 1942 as part of General Motors' rapid response to the war effort— More than 21,000 were built to take troops and materials ashore during the 0-Day landings, The DUKWs weigh in at 7.5 tonnes, are 32ft long, have six wheels and can reach a maximum speed of 45mph on land and 6.3mph in the water.
