Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Eugene SiIke III Pressure for legislation to tackle vehicle crime is mounting with claims of widespread support for a bill introducing visible

vehicle identification numbers on new vehicles.

This would help police and would-be buyers determine if a vehicle had been stolen.

If Colchester MP John Whittingdale's private member's bill goes through, manufacturers would be required to mark their vehicles with a tamper-proof VIN.

This bid to deter soaring vehicle crime in the UK follows a spate of initiatives to register commercial vehicles more thoroughly: • Finance companies are proposing a compulsory central register of vehicles based on VINs rather than registration numbers (CM 21-27 April) • The Vehicle Inspectorate could introduce a computerised register of trailer details (CM 5-11 May); • The Department of Trade & Industry is looking at the law on transfer of title as vehicles are sold.

The DTI is due to report on responses to its recent consultation document later this year. The Home Office wants other manufacturers to copy Ford's new Mondeo which has a visible VIN recessed into the dashboard as recommended by police.

But there is no agreement on an equivalent location for trucks.
