Council complains of repairs in car park

• A haulage firm parked its lorries and carried out repairs in a public car park, a council complained to the South Eastern Licensing Authority at Eastbourne this week.
The firm, Ireland Transport of Petworth, West Sussex, had its application to add vehicles to its licences refused.
After hearing evidence from Mrs M. G. Ireland, for Ireland Transport, on the servicing, maintenance and garaging of existing vehicles, the LA Maj-Gen A. F. J. Elmslie said that the firm's system was too complex to work satisfactorily with extra vehicles. The existing licence was renewed for one year only.
Mr Cyril Thompson, deputy clerk to Petworth RDC, said they had complained after Ireland Transport vehicles had been left in a local public car park for longer than permitted. Repairs to the vehicles had also been carried out in the car park, he alleged.
If Mrs Ireland could give evidence that she had a suitable place for her vehicles, the council would withdraw its complaint, he said. Mrs Ireland assured the LA that she would no longer use the car park for the matters complained of.
The St Leonard's haulage firm of Broxbourne Plant, which also appeared before the LA had its oldest vehicle curtailed from the licence for three months and its margin of one vehicle and trailer removed.
The vehicle examiner, Mr Charles Perrett, said that the firm had been issued with two prohibitions. One vehicle was submitted three times until it was finally cleared.
Mr Perrett said the firm's maintenance facilities were inadequate and there was no maintenance record available when he visited the site.
