NEW rules about marking heavy, long or wide loads are likely to stem from the Road Transport Lighting Bill, given a Second Reading by the Commons last week. Mr. Stephen Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, hoped the Bill would enable the Minister to make further regulations.
Mr. Ray Mawby (Tory, Totnes) said reflective material along the side of attics would reduce the danger of accidents when a car approached a long vehicle which made a turn.
The Bill permits the use of reflective number plates. It was inspired by a private measure from Mr. Kenneth Lomas (Labour, Huddersfield West). If rearlights failed, he said, vehicles which could he under-run could cause bad accidents, especially to motorcyclists and mini cars. He was pleased to hear that the Ministry had in mind the need for a reflective triangle on the tailboard and reflective and fluorescent zebra stripes on the sides.
