OPINION on the merits of lorry racing may differ, but John Haigh, marketing manager of Leyland Parts, has been honoured for "the most spectacular one-off publicity event" — the Multipart Truck Grand Prix at Castle Donington last September. He has accepted the Motor Industry Public Affairs Association's Alfred Woolf Award on behalf of the organising team. The award perpetuates the memory of a co-founder of the public relations agency of Woolf, Laing and Christie. The ebullient Alfred was another successful transport journalist who was trained on Commercial Motor. He joined this journal from Swansea University, where he was a contemporary of Harry Secombe, about 35 years ago, and specialised in passenger transport. A natural skill as a writer was combined with a fertile imagination. If he was asked for an idea for an article, he would probably reel off halfa-dozen. The only thing then left was to persuade him to write one of them before the issue closed for press!
