THE fleet of vehicles used on the new pipe-laying project of the Iraq 'etroleum Co„ Ltd., from Kirkuk to he Eastern Mediterranean coast, has ecently been augmented by 12 Thornyrofts built to the order of George Vimpey and Co., Ltd. Six of these rehic le s are 30-seater. buses, five are ,0011-gallon tankers, and the remaining ine is for breakdown service.

The buses which will be used for 'onveying Wimpey's staff and workeople to and from the various build

ig are based on Trident normalontrol left-hand-drive export Chassis of 3-ft. 6-in. wheelbase. Powered by a 'R6 six-cylindered 78 b.h.p. oil engine, le chassis has a 14-in, single-plate lutch, five-speed gearbox and hypoid car axle.

The Park Royal bodies are of the :.ont-entrance type. All the seats arc pholstered in brown leather and face nwards Light-alloy panels are used iside and outside, being secured to eel pillars by rivets. All windows are f the half-drop type.

At the rear of the body is a large nergency door incorporating a )acious window. Generous locker 'ace is provided under the rear seats. ix extractor vents are fitted in the roof. A spare wheel is carried beneath the .arne at the rear, where there is also tow bar. These are hidden by a panel hich is made to hinge upwards, where can be held in a horizontal position it two stays.

A towing loop is fitted at the front, so that the vehicle can be pulled out of soft ground or can assist another.

These buses are not intended for public service, and for this reason maximum ground clearance has been afforded by not dropping the frame.

The five tankers are based on Thornycroft Trusty six-wheeled I7-ft. 3-in. wheelbase left-hand-drive export chassis. The four rear wheels are driven. Each chassis is fitted with a Neville allmetal hinged cab, in which special attention has been given to ventilation.

The tanks carry a total of 2,000 gallons, being divided into .three compartments,' each of which has a capa

city of approximately 670 gallons. One compartment will be used for petrol and the other two for oil. They were made by the Steel Barrel Co.,. Ltd.. Uxbridge. Constructed of I2-gauge mild steel, all joints are welded, and the ends and division plates are flanged and dished.

The front of each tank is carried forward to form a housing for the pump compartment in which three 2in. outlets are coupled to a Kitson pump driven from the vehicle power take-off by means of a duplex chain. The output from the pump is 3.500 gallons per hour at the nominal speed of 350 r.p.m.

For the breakdown vehicle the Trusty six-wheeled four-wheel-drive shortwheelbase export chassis was selected. This chassis has special cooling arrangements for the eng:ne in the form of a radiator of large area and a six-bladed fan. This vehicle also has a Neville allsteel fully enclosed cab with insulated roof and a rear window.

The fixed-sided body which accommodates the breakdown equipment, tools and spare-wheel carrier, was built by M. 0. Harper, Ltd., Guildford. The floor is made of 5%-in.-thick steel plate. and there are three rings on each side for the reception of snatch blocks for winch-rope operation.

Equipment includes a Harvey Frost 5-ton manually operated crane and a Darlington powered winch of 50,000 lb. capacity.
