Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A handwriting expert, called in by the railways, took a prominent part in a transport case before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, at Leeds, last week. There were allegations of the forging of certain documents, including log sheets.

The application was that of Affiliated Transports, Ltd., Great George Street, Leeds, to take over the general goodstransport businesses of Mr. II. Shuttleworth, Idle, Bradford, Mr. j: Cooling, Heckmondwike, Mr. H. FaIlas, Leeds,

and Mr. T. Cooling, Leeds. It was also for the continuation of a licence granted to the Carlton Haulage Co.. operating from Earby, Colne.

There were railway suggestions that log sheets had not only been forged, but had been artificially dirtied, to make them appear genuine.

The hearing was adjourned.

New Road to Dartford Tunnel.

On the application of Kent County Council, the Minister of Transport has made a grant from the Road Fund towards the cost, estimated at £90,000, of acquiring land for the construction of the new arterial road, 9f miles long, which is to form the southern approach to the Dartford-Purfieet Tunnel. The proposed road will begin at Green Street Green, near Farnborough, where it will form a junction with the London-Hastings Road.

By,providing direct connection with the most important roads radiating from •London through • Kent, the new road will afford access from the tunnel to all parts of the south-east coast.

• Monthly Payment Plan Shows Tai Savings.

A plan introduced by Bowmaker, Ztd,, for, the financing of Road Fund taxation is meeting with much success amongst commercial-vehicle operators. The company's scheme provides for the tax being paid in monthly instalments extending over the whole year, but, when compared with the normal quarterly system, is. cheaper by as much as aa per cent. Under the scheme, Bowmaker. Ltd., pays the total annual tax direct, at the beginning of the year, to the licensing authorities, and the operator pays to the company an initial amount of onetwelfth of the total, followed by 11 equal monthly instalments to cover the balance, plus a small accommodation charge.

Large Cylinder Crack Repaired Without Dismantling.

In our issue of November 4 we referred to the new metallic preparation, known as Wondar Weld, obtainable from Douglas Holt (Est. 1919), Ltd., 9, Little Turnstile, Holborn, London, W.C.1.

We supplied a sample of this to a

friend in the road-transport world, who has' a vehicle the 25 h.p. engine of which has a cracked cylinder. He refrained from reporting at once, because he wished to know whether the material made a permanent repair. ,Actually he applied it ready a month ago. The Wondar Weld did not seal the crack completely to start with, but the seepage of water gradually grew less, and it would appear that the crack is now completely sealed, and

permanently so. This, he adds, is rather remarkable, as the actual crack in the cylinder is 7 ins. long.

In applying the preparation he found it necessary not only to remove the upper hose from the cylinder block, but also the thermostat. This was'due to the fact that the instrument was attached to the top of the block. Incidentally, the fluid is non-corrosive.

The vehicle is now being run, without attempting to make any further' repair to the crack.

Ulster Asked to Repeal Transport Act.

At a meeting of Dungannon (Co. Tyrone) Urban Council, on Monday, the chairman proposed a motion urging the Government of Northern Ireland to repeal the Road and Rail Transport Act, 1935. An amendment aSking the Government suitably to amend the Act was defeated, the motion being passed by a majority of the council.

Alvis-Stroussler Changes Its Title.

The company formerly known as Alvis-Straussler, Ltd., Holyhead Road, Coventry, has changed its name to Alvis Mechanisation, Ltd., Mr. Straussler no longer being connected with it LONDON TRAFFIC GO-ORDINATION DEMANDED.

The Society of United Motorists, writing from Birmingham to the Ministry of Transport, in connection with the Draft " NO-waiting" Regulations, says that it would be interesting to know the reason for such a drastic interference with stationary and working.aFehieles, as this is nowhere stated in the proposals.

It fails to see how the limits to be imposed an lorries, vans and cars will in any way facilitate traffic and stop the delay to trade and traders.

The remedy lies in the modernization, of the design of the road and streets, and the suggestions came as a greater surprise in view of the Bressey Report. Without altering the main junctions, and many others which act as centres of congestion, the mere removal of certain standing vehicles from some streets between the junctions will not help the movement of traffic. It seems ridiculous, says the Association, that measures of so little value should lie in the hands of the Ministry throughout the London Traffic Area, whilst all important measures, such as the construction of new streets, should be left in the hands of innumerable local authorities.
