PARLIAMENT

By Our Special Parliamentary Correspondent

Coaches in Central London.

THE Minister of Transport states that he has under consideration the question of the limitation of motorcoach services in the central area of London, but he is unable, at this stage, to make any statement on the subject. In the event of it being decided to make regulations dealing with the matter, due notice will be given before the regulations become operative, so as to allow the parties affected to make any representation they may consider necessary.

Motor Insurance Claims.

ira. R. TAYLOR asked the Minister „LV_Lof Transport whether the approved conditions of contracts in respect of compulsory insurance by owners of motor vehicles would secure that in the event of the death of a defendant, following an accident, a claim by the injured person for personal damages might be made against the insurance company concerned.

Mr. Morrison said "I have no power under the Road Traffic Act to approve or disapprove of conditions attached to policies of insurance. In the circumstances referred to, no claim on the part of the injured person would ordinarily lie against the insurance company. "The legal maxim that a right of personal action ceases on the death of the person against whom it may be brought is a wide application, and although the point was considered when the Road Traffic Bill was before the House, the decision was reached that it would not be right to introduce an exception to this general principle, in a particular case such as that of insurance against third-party risks."

Petrol Station By-laws.

FINAL or provisional approval to bylaws dealing with the erection of petrol pumps has been given in the case of 10 county councils and 12 borough councils. In addition, 13 county councils have submitted proposals which are now under consideration by the Home Office.

Motor Export Trade.

LAST week the President of the Board of Trade informed the House of Commons that the British motorvehicle industry was, on co-operative lines, vigorously prosecuting the development of its business in overseas markets. In spite of the world depression, which naturally affected to a considerable degree an industry of this

character, the results which had been achieved, particularly in the New Zealand market, were most encouraging. As part of its policy the industry had made arrangements for a comprehensive display of British motor products at the British Empire Trade Exhibition to be held at Buenos Aires next year (as already reported in this journal).

Alien Taxicab Drivers.

A CCORDING to recent Home Office 21.statistics, 67 aliens are licensed to drive motorcabs for hike on the streets of London. The nationalities are: Russian, 40 ; Dutch, 10; Swiss, five ; Polish, three; Armenian, two; Danish, two; French, Italian, Norwegian, German and Greek one each.

Shooter's Hill By-pass.

T" greater part of the new by-pass in Woolwich has, it is officially stated, been completed, and work is proceeding on the Greenwich section and at the Well Hall Road junction. The London, County Council has invited tenders for the new bridge, and its construction should be begun shortly.

Dangerous Bridge in Glamorgan.

A TTENTION was called to a recent 11.fatal accident on the road bridge over the canal at Llandaff -North, Glamorganshire, and the rider by the coroner's jury declaring that the bridge was an unusually dangerous one.

Mr.. Morrison stated that his divisional road engineer was in COMM:lineation with the Cardiff City Council, which was the responsible highways authority, with respect to the bridge, and he was prepared to consider an application for a grant from the Road Fund towards the cost of any approved scheme that the corporation might submit for its improvement or reconstruction.
