Calais fire brigades that it is likely to set up its own in-house team of firefighters, following a recommendation by fire safety consultants.
The tunnel fire in November 1996, now known to have been arson, prompted Eurotunnel to call in consultants Dawsons International to undertake a review of its safety and evacuation procedures. Full findings from the review are not expected until June, but it has emerged that Eurotunnel will be urged to employ its own firefighters instead of using local fire brigades on either side of the crossing. A spokeswoman stressed that any change would not take place until at least 2001. "A dedicated team of firefighters could patrol the tunnel 24 hours a day and check the safety of tunnel equipment," she said.
