• A Mercedes 1626/32 tractive unit has been stolen from a lorry park in Barton-on-Humber, costing its owners Si Barrick about £6,000.

The South Humberside firm suspects the thieves used a duplicate key to enter the vehicle and then drive it away. The empty trailer was left behind.

The vehicle's registation is C970 KBE and it has a green and cream livery. The chassis number is 6171312517631 with engine number H2290920120854.

• Some £57,000 of Mercedes and MAN engines have been stolen from a Southampton used CV dealer and breaker in an audacious crime involving payment with a stolen building society cheque.

C Morgan and Sons (Motors and Spares) is asking hauliers and workshops to look out for the 19 engines which were taken on 27 March, The company accepted the Cheltenham and Gloucester cheque after a day of stalling when the buyer had avoided presenting it for payment. It finally arrived at 5.30pm on the Friday night when it was impossible to verify payment and the company released the container-load of engines believing it would miss the boat to South Africa if there was any delay.

But Cheltenham and Gloucester refused to honour the cheque, saying it was one of a book that had been stolen two years previously. Derek Morgan says: "Activity is very depressed so we were looking for a break." The buyer, who called himself David Johnson, was promising a deal for regular shipment of engines to South Africa and had placed another 'order' for 45.

Three of the Mercedes engines had lost their engine number tags; the remaining engines are numbered: vee-eight 0M422.11, numbers 42290920041370, 42290920042229, 42290920042273 and 42290920107667; vee-six 0M421, 42190520149671, 42190520119005 and 40192620153370; straight-six 0M352, numbers 35395120452698, 53595120788231 and 53597820621386.

One MAN had lost its tag; the rest are numbered: straight-six model 331, numbers D2866LFZR 35151780493121, and D2866LFZR 35152670723121; straight-six 321, number D2566MKF 35850400433121; and staight-six 28, number D2566MKF280 35844210923111.

• Volvos continue to be a prime target for truck thieves. An FL6S was stolen from Peacock & Binnington's depot at Old Foundry, Brigg, South Humberside: the thieves ignored the Scania artic which is also based there. A neighbour heard a disturbance at about 05:30hrs on 4 April and the truck was seen on the M180 at 06:15hrs. Its registration is C83 KFU with chassis number YB1M06BA5FB009379. The chassis is black with a mainly white cab bearing the company name in red across the top of the cab. The body has a beaver tail, aluminium ramps and a Hiab.

RH Gifford Haulage lost an Iveco Ford 190.32 tractor from its yard on Leyden Road after thieves unhitched the trailer, broke the window and drove off in the £22,000 unit. Its registration is F450 JLG.

The artic was surrounded by three trailers, two other tractive units, two 17-tonners and a 7.5-tonner and its trailer contained a load of fire prevention equipment worth up to £100,000. "We feel they wanted it for the engine because the vehicle was so striking," says owner Ronald Gifford. The cab was white with the company name in orange and brown lettering.

Also stolen from Leyden Road was a Stevenage Removals Bedford TK van, registration ENC 1031. The 7.5-tonner is white with 'Stevenage Removals' in large red letters.

Inspector John Gilbert of Stevenage Police says: "We are working on an assumption that there is a common link in the thefts. It may simply be that two or three chaps turned up to take one vehicle and took advantage of the situation." But he admits: "We have little to go on until the vehicles turn up."
