SWITCHING TO lift-up curtain roller-siders from platform bodies has helped South Yorkshire operator Barber Road Services to diversify into new traffics with its fleet of demounts based on Volvo F6 and Leyland Clydesdale chassis.

Lawrence David of Peterborough converted the platform bodied demountable underframes and built seven new ones for multi-drop operation. Powered by the vehicle's battery, the side curtains are raised electrically by small motors concealed in the front bulkhead. Lifting equipment on the Ray Smith guide-rail demount installation is also driven electrically. A safeguard incorporating the required movement at a Cotton quick-release plug prevents demounting of the body while chassis electrics are connected to the curtain lifting mechanism.
