ISPOKE to a mother this week about her 25-year-old son, who is suffering from a serious kidney disease. He is David Lowes of Snowsgreen Road, Shotley Bridge (Co. Durham) and every week he has 24 hours' life-saving treatment in hospital on a kidney machine.

His mother, Mrs. Mildred Lowes, said: "David is really wonderful. He knows he is very ill but won't give in. I help to run his firm, but David is the driving force behind it. I answer the 'phones and that sort of thing, but David keeps me advised on policy; he has to because I don't know the first thing about it. His firm is his only real interest in life and he wants it to expand."

David is a haulier.
