A N. emergency meeting of the coinrnittee of the Booking Agents Association. of Great Britain, Ltd., was held in London on August 31st to consider the statement recently made by Mr. Henry. Riches, chairman of the Northern Area Traffic Commissioners, to the 'effect that it was proposed, by means of conditions attached to roadservice licences., to limit booking agents' commission to 5 per cent, for sub-agents and 74 per cent, for main agents-. A remark rafta.,± by Mr. Rowand. Harker, chairman of the South-Eastern Commissioners, that he hoped before long to find some means for dealing with the question of booking agents' commission, was also considered at the Meeting. The honorary solicitor of the association said that, in his opinion, Traffic Commissioners had no right to attach any conditions to road-service licences which .would affect booking agents' commission, and that if such a condition were imposed the association could appeal to the Minister of Transport, or, alternatively, apply to the King's Bench Division to restrain the Commissioners.

In the discussion which ensued it was stated that agents appointed in the north of England by 'United Automobile Services, Ltd., receive only 5 per cent., but that they work upon quite a different basis from that which is customary in London and the south of' England, where, it was contended, a 5-per-cent. commission would result in the closing of 75 per cent, of the booking offices. It was estimated that in London there are, at the present time, between 2,000 and 3,000 agents with effective businesses.

The committee decided to call an open meeting of all booking agents, whether members of the ee.sociation or not, to ascertain their views as to the best action to be taken, and if necessary, to raise a fighting fund to take the matter to the King's. Bench Division should

occasion arise. This meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17th, at 8.15 p.m. at Anderton's Hotel, Fleet Street, London, E.C.4.
