• In the first month of computerised smoke testing there appears to be no dramatic increase in the number of vehicles failing the test. While figures are not yet available from the VI, test stations report failure rates similar to those under the old system. One station reported only 11 failures out of around 250 tests.
Turbocharged ['baser and Eagle 325Tx engines have been given a temporary exemption from the new smoke test. 'Hie company says in tests carried out before 1 September its engines -produced higher readings than expected". Vehicles fitted with the engines that fail the computerised test will be subject to the old style 'calibrated eyeball' test.
While Perkins has not specified the problem it says: "We believe that the issue concerns not only the engine . . . but also the test procedures.
Vehicles failing the smoke test before the end of November will get a free retest.
