Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Automatic Retractor Incorporated in two Semi-trailers with MorrisCommercial and Commer Tractor Units Respectively

Stand 89

THE Show marks the introduction of the Carrimore patent automatic retractor gear as a standard feature of all semi-trailers made by this wellknown specialist. This device is to be seen on a semi-trailer attached to a Morris Commercial Leader 4-ton tractor chassis and on a Commer tractortrailer outfit for machinery transport.

By its use, it is • possible to reduce from about 2 ft. to 6 ins. the space required between the end of the semitrailer and the back of the cab to allow for articulation. In this way the body length may materially be increased. Instead of the front corners of the body describing a circle around the king-pin, they move in an approximately straight line at right angles to the axis of the tractive unit.

The operation of the device depends upon the imparting of two motions to the front end of the trailing unit, which is achieved by the use of two pins working in two slots, one being cut longitudinally in the lower plate of the turntable and the other, of parabolic form, in the upper plate. One pin is fixed to the upper plate and pointed downwards and the other to the lower plate, pointing upwards.

If the tractor be stationary and the semi-trailer be swinging to one side, as the rearmost point of the curved slot (where the curvature is greatest) leaves the stationary pin (say, to the right), the upper turntable plate is compelled to travel backwards in relation to the tractor as it rotates. The forward pin preserves centralization and moves along the straight slot, also towards the rear of the tractor.

The latest type of Carrimore 6-ton trailer is also in evidence, this having pinless roller turntable,., servooperated four-wheel brakes intercoupled with the tractor foot brake and an anti-rattle device incorporated in the drawbar.

The new 2-3-ton trailer, specially designed for use behind light lorries, is well worthy of inspection.—Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., High Road, North Finchley, London, N.12.
