Stand 13

(\NE of the high spots of the Show is kJ undoubtedly the new Bristol axialnine-cylindered petrol engine. The 31-in. bore and 51-in. stroke give a capacity of 7.2 litres, the R.A.C. rating being 44.1 h.p. We are informed that it is capable of developin,; 150 b.h.p. Another new Bristol petrol engine,' known as the P.W. type, with four cylinders of 4k-in. bore and 51-in. stroke (described in last week's issue of The Commercial Motor) is on view in the J-model chassis for 26-36-seater coach or bus bodywork. Actually, this chassis is available with a variety of power units, comprising Bristol four or six-cylindered petrol units, or Gardner five and 'six-cylindered oil engines.

Power is transmitted to the fully floating-shaft rear axle through a single-plate clutch, a Bristol overspeed • gearbox (providing . five forward speeds and a reverse, and incorposating a patent selector gear), and a two-sectioned •propeller shaft with Simms universal joints fore and aft of the front section and Hardy Spicer needle-roller bearing joints on the sear part. The engine and gearbox are mounted on rubber. The brakes are of

the Dewandre servo type. The wheelbase is 17 ft. a ins.

The j chassis also serves as the basis of a 26-seater coach with a composite_ body, entrance and exit being made. through a sliding door at the front. There is a hinged emergency exit on the off side at the front, whilst a sliding single-panel head is fitted. In this case the maker's J.W.-type sixcylindered petrol engine is employed.

This model of power unit is also incorporated in the G-type chassis for 48-52-seater bodywork, which is . on view. The overspeed gearbox is, top,, available alternatively in this chassis. The G chassis also appears carrying 4$-seater all-metal coachwork, with a rear enclosed straight staircase on the off side, and an emergerfek exit on the upper deck at the back.

A combination of the Gardner fivecylindered oil engine and the Bristol four-speed gearbox is used in the model shown.—Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., Tramways Centre, Bristol.
