Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

that urgent single pallet deliveries cost a fortune, and small consignments would only be taken as and when vehicles were going in that direction.

From the mid-199os, things changed with operators taking charge of deliveries to and from their postcode areas in new nationwide networks, providing general hauliers with a flexible tool to attract and retain business. Networks normally charge a one-off joining fee to member hauliers, although some charge a weekly fee that will include elements of administration and marketing.

All networks say they vet new applicants closely, since the networks are only as effective as the quality of the members. And they remain relevant—as one pallet network boss says: The Working Time Directive has changed everyone's focus. Networks have become interesting to people who dismissed them previously." A new co-operative—Pallet Track—is set to join the fray soon. So here is CM's guide to what is currently out there.

• CM classified is now running a new section on pallets. More information on 020 8652 3600.
