Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AQUESTION involving the goodwill of a Liverpool haulage concern, liquidated last August, caused the adjournment of two applications at Liverpool last week.

Batemax, Ltd., Liverpool, applied for two tankers of 174 tons unladen on A licence for bulk liquid to Lancashire, . Cheshire, Yorkshire, London, southern and south-eastern counties, all sea ports and as required. If granted it was proposed that the vehicles would be transferred from Batemax to Lawrenson's (Haulage), Ltd., as an agreement to do so was drawn up between the two concerns in November, 1958.

However, on August 23, 1958, the Lawrenson organization had been liquidated by Mr. E. Shawcross-Ball, a chartered accountant. The business was to be sold, but various complications had arisen concerning the goodwill.

Mr. G. W. Duncan, deputising for the North-Western Deputy Licensing Authority, said that when an agreement of this nature was made the goodwill should leave the company at liquidation. As this was an elementary matter of law, he said he would not listen to oral evidence until the matter had been cleared up. .

A similar application by G. Lawrenson and Son, Ltd., of Bootle, for one tanker of 8-¢ tons on A licence with a normal user to read "bulk liquids to all counties of England north of, and including, Cheshire, Yorkshire, London, south and south-eastern counties, and as required," was put before Mr. Duncan.

If this vehicle was granted it was also proposed to transfer it to Lawrenson's (Haulage), Ltd. Following Mr. Duncan's remarks on the first case, G. Lawrenson and Sons. Ltd., asked for adjournment.

MIDLAND "RED" INCREASE iNCREASES in costs amounting to I £250.000. of which wages accounted for 1200.000, are stated by Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus, Ltd., to be the basis of a fares application to be heard by the Traffic Commissioners on May 13 and 14.

An application was made before the Budget, the effects of which will reduce the company's costs. by £90,000.

BUBBLECARS BLAMED

BUBBLECARS and the increased use of other small vehicles were the reasons given for a reduction in the number of people using buses to the East . Midlands Traffic Commissioners at Derby last week. Mr. D. L. Fytehe, traffic manager of the North Western Road Car, Ltd., Stockport, was supporting the company's application for increased fares on some routes.

It was stated that there would be an estimated deficit of £44,000 in the current year. The increases applied for would produce about £40,000. .

Mr, C. R. Hodgson, chairman, withheld decision until the result of a similar application made to the North Western Traffic Commissioners was known.
