PROGRESS in rates stabilization was reported at the annual meeting of the Glasgow and District Horse and Motor Contractors Association.

The report stated that numerous meetings had been held duritTg the year to deal with the question of rates, which was being handled on a sectienal basis. In file grain, fiSh and produce trades, a provisional' list of time rates had been prepared. It was intended, in the .ensuing session, to deal with rates in the various sections of the building trade.

In connection with rates for cartage for Glasgow Corporation, a proposal that the matter be discussed between municipal representatives and a cornmittee of the Association executive had been rejected by the corporation, but the subject was still being pursued.

During the year the Association continued its representation on the Scottish Transport Contractors Federation, the Conciliation Board, the haulage committee of the Milk Marketing Board, and the employers' panel of the Joint Committee underl ,the National Health Insurance Acts,

C.M.U.A. AND A.R.O. COMBINE IN KENT.

As a result of a meeting of operators, most of whom are members either of the C.M.U.A. or A.R.O., which was held at Sittingbourne, last week, a joint committee for the $ittingbounne district, to work in conjunction with the C.M.U.A., has been formed.

The meeting was presided over by Mr. S. C. 1Measday. He was supported by Mr. J. L. Kinder (national organizer, C.M.U.A.) and Mr. R. B. Sinclair (Landon and Home Counties Division representative). Mr. Kinder instanced cases at Weston-supee-Mare. Crewe and Coventry, where matters of great importance to operators, which could not have been adequately dealt with by the individuals themselves, had been successfully investigated and straightened out by the C.M.U.A.

A local committee of C.M.U.A. and A.R.O. members was then elected. Mr. F. Packer (Sittingbourne) agreed to carry out the duties of hon. secre tary for the first six months. Messrs. D. Aylward (Teynham), F.' Elvy (Doddington), A. J. Campbell (Faversham), S. Stevens (Newington), S. C. Measday, J. E. Fowle and W. Martin (Sittingbourne) were appointed to the committee.

New A.R.O. Sub-area in Yorkshire.

Mr. Senden, of Castleford, has been elected chairman of the new A.R.O. Castleford Sub-area. The followihg have been appointed to the committee:—Messrs. A. V. Hussey, S. Davies, J. Taylor, W. Robbins, M. Newbould, J. F. Baker, and J. Stockwell.

100 More Yorkshire Members.

Since the merging of the Yorkshire Stage Carriage Operators Association with the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O. two months ago, the membership of the combined organizations has increased by about 100, and the number of members on the books now stands at approximately 2,700.

The appointment of a central high

ways board to control the whole road system in Great Britain, the raising of the Minister of Traasport to Cabinet rank, and the increasing of the speed limit from 20 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. for all pneumatic-tyred goods vehicles having modern braking equipment, were suggestions made by Mr. John McDonald, president of the Scottish C.M.U.A., at the annual meeting of the Association, in Glasgow:

Mr. McDonald said that Mr. Hare Belisha should be in a position to discuss matters of leading importance with the Cabinet and not indirectly through another Minister.

Membership was reported to be 197

more than last year. The number of vehicles covered by the Association was over 7,500. Mr. McDonald was re-elected president, -Sir W. J. Thomson, vice-president, and Mr. John W. Loudon secretary.
