II Maintenance problems said to be caused by the takeover of Nationwide Coaches by Carnwath-based Wilsons Coaches, have led to both companies having their PSV Operator's Licences renewed for only three years by Scottish Traffic Commissioner Keith Waterworth.

Waterworth reserved his decision over what action to take when the two companies appeared at disciplinary proceedings in Edinburgh. Wilsons Coaches wanted to renew its licence for 50 vehicles, and Nationwide for 39 (CM 15-21 February).

Since 1984, there were 28 immediate prohibitions and 11 delayed on Wilson vehicles. Nationwide vehicles attracted 18 immediate prohibitions, and seven delayed. Waterworth said he did not think the record of either company warranted revocation, and he noted there was an operational need for the 50 vehicles and 39 vehicles currently licensed.

In renewing its licence, he issued Wilsons Coaches with a final warning, and warned Nationwide about its future maintenance standards, and the need to sustain the improvements already made.

Waterworth said he wanted to allow sufficient time for the two companies to demonstrate the effectiveness of their new maintenance arrangements.
