Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EIGHT meetings are to be held next week by the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association to enlist the support of independent operators against the proposed area scheme for road passenger transport in the West Country. Mr. J. W. Birch, chairman of the Association, Mr. F. J. Speight, vice-chairman, and Mr. F. A. Walker, national secretary, will explain the law relating to the nationalization of passenger transport.

In a statement issued last week to operators in the south-west, the P.V.O.A. declared that a united front could defeat the proposed area scheme.

The meetings are as follows: June 12, 11.30 a.m., White House Hotel, Frome; 3.30 p.m., King's Arms Hotel, Dorchester; 8 p.m., Castle Hotel, Taunton. June 13, 11 a.m., Royal and Fortesque Hotel, Barnstaple; 4 p.m., Clarence Hotel, Exeter; 7 p.m.' Victoria Hotel, Torquay. June 14, 11 a.m., Grand Hotel, Plymouth; 3.30 p.m., Brookdale Hotel, Truro.

GREATER PAYMENTS FROM ROAD FUND

PAYMENTS from the Road Fund in 1949-50 for the maintenance, improvement and construction of roads were nearly £26m., compared with £23m. in 1948-49. The amount paid out in respect of trunk roads was £9,215,000, an increase of £1,299,000. Maintenance and minor improvement of trunk roads cost £0,868,000, and improvement and new construction £1.963.000.

Grants to highway authorities totalled £15,923,000, compared with £14,804,000 in the previous 12 months.

These figures are given in the Report on the Administration of the Road Fund for 1949-50, published last week by the Stationery Office, price 2s. The 1949-50 programme of road improvement and new construction work was somewhat larger than for the previous year, states the report, but when the investment limit for 1950 was fixed in the middle of 1949, it was seen that the 1949 programme would entail a larger consequential expenditure in 1950 than this limit would allow. Authorization of new works was, therefore, restricted, The programme was again curtailed in the autumn of 1949.
