Andy Salter reports on Volvo's commitment to SCR for all of its truc Ks.

WITH THE EURO-4 emissions deadline fast approaching Volvo has joined Mercedes. Daf and Iveco in confirming it will use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after-treatment for its entire truck range.

Given Volvo's experience with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology in the US, many pundits had expected the Swedish truck builder to adopt a dual strategy. However, senior engineers at the Gothenberg HQ have confirmed FL models down to 7.5 tonnes GVW, which are due to be re-powered by new Deutz-built engines next year, will join the FH and FM in using SCR. Sister company Renault will share this technology.

Ove Wikstrom. Volvo's European driveline product planning manager. says SCR will give a fuel consumption advantage over the rival EGR technology.

He adds that paying for SCR before the advent of Euro-4 in October 2006 will be a matter for each operator to calculate, based on their mileage — particularly the mileage that's covered in countries like Germany offering a financial incentive for early compliance.

Wikstrom points out that Euro-4 certification will not begin until May 2005. some four months after the implementation ot the German MAUT road-tolling scheme and associated low-emission incentive programme.

He says availability of SCR on Volvo trucks is likely to be phased in with vehicle certification. By then he expects an adequate network of urea supply points to be in place. The first public service station in Sweden with an urea pump was opened at the end of June.
