A MEMORIAL service for the late Sir Robert Lawrence, the first chairman of the National Freight Consortium who died two months ago, was attended by 860 people. Among them were some distinguished names from the world of transport.

Those present at the service held at St Pancras Parish Church in London last week included: Lord Shepherd, chairman of the National Bus Company; Sir Peter Thompson, current WC chairman; Jack Mather, NFC chief executive; Freddie Plaskett, director-general of the Road Haulage Association; and Victor Paige, chairman of the Port of London Authority and NFC deputy chairman.

Sir Robert's predecessor as chairman of the National Freight Corporation, Sir Daniel Pettit, was also in attendance, as were Bob Reid, chairman of the British Railways Board; Lord Marsh, former Transport Minister and BR chairman; and Peter Lazarus, Permanent Secretary, Department of Transport.
